We need Norwood Hospital.

Help us tell state health officials that our region needs this hospital rebuilt and reopened as soon as possible. We need the jobs. We need the hospital beds. We need Norwood Hospital back in action.

In June 2020, Norwood Hospital was evacuated during an emergency flood event, following a simultaneous 500-year storm and microburst. Damage was determined to be so severe that the entire hospital needed to be rebuilt.

Initial estimates indicated the hospital ER would be up and running after 3-4 weeks. Nearly four years later, Norwood’s still waiting to get its hospital back.

Ever since the devastating floods of 2020 forced the closure of Norwood Hospital, our region has faced a severe, ongoing healthcare crisis. More than 250,000 residents across 12 local communities—including Norwood, Walpole, Dedham, Westwood, Canton, Sharon, Foxborough, Medfield, Dover, Mansfield, Norfolk, and Wrentham—have been completely cut off from local emergency and inpatient hospital care.

For over half a decade, our families have borne the dangerous consequences of this closure. We face significantly longer travel times during medical emergencies, fewer available inpatient beds, and delays in critical medical care. Furthermore, our displacement has severely overcrowded neighboring regional hospitals, straining the entire healthcare infrastructure of eastern Massachusetts.

Healthcare close to home saves lives. Bill H.5553, which authorizes the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) to take certain land in Norwood by eminent domain, is the vital catalyst needed to finally break through bureaucratic delays and pave the way to restore a full-service, regional hospital at the former Norwood Hospital site.

The House of Representatives has advanced this legislation, and our communities are now looking to you. We urgently need the Senate to pass Bill H.5553 as an emergency law so that the Commonwealth can step in, protect its citizens, and help us rebuild the local emergency and inpatient care we so desperately need.
